I think the last time I had to really clean contacts of any kind was on iffy switches on my Benz - when I got it the seat and window switches were no good. Being german, they’re plastic dealies with springs and balls inside. That’s been... probably 8 years or more. :D

My go-to has been chlorinated brake fluid, never used a dedicated contact cleaner. What’s the base on the stuff you’re using?

I did have one bad switch on the Galaxie. Except, contact cleaner doesn’t uncorrode floor headlight dimmer switches that have the cap literally fused in place. And the blades were so stuck in the plug that the contacts came out of the side. Great for me to clean them. Aha. Ha.

I HATE switches with springs and balls! On one of the window switches, it had the ball/spring and the ball jammed the spring and started to smoke. So now I need another switch with proper “pushpins”.

I have no idea what the base is but I didn’t know you could use chlorinated brake cleaner. That’s great to know. High evaporating cleaners are great for parts but hell on my hands.

I lucked out back when I had my Rabbit in having minimal electrics. Manual windows and locks, and the headlight switch was pretty robust. I could easily have had 80s German Car Switch Blues then too. Now that I think about it, the horn switch was bypassed when I got it...

Does VW parts-binning count as an obvious reason?

No that’s a solution. Finding new window switches will be easy because of it.

Was it bad that I just used wire brushes and distilled vinegar to clean the contacts on my window switches??

That’s fine if the mung present is mostly metal oxides. If dead plastic and/or greasiness, need something to cut it.

Got ya. It was metal oxidation

Where you can need something extra is if the contacts were dirty and got hot, and burned some of the oils in the switch, or something like that - and vinegar isn’t that great at carbon or char. Or the switch can have had a dollop of grease on a pivot point that just melted and migrated...

I mean, I’m sounding all sciencey here, but it’s not a refined thought process when you’re actually doing a switch. “Oh, hey, this glarb on the contacts is greasy.” “Oh, hey, it’s dry and crusty - time to get the steel wool”. Habits ingrained as practice, not requiring much thought.

Haha makes sense. That’s good experience to have.
